The vineyard

Spanning 50 hectares, and positioned at the edge of the Monbazillac appellation, our vineyard contains similar grape varieties to those found in Bordeaux.

Our whites (26 hectares) include Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle.

Our reds (24 hectares) include Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The property also comprises 3.3 hectares of Chardonnay vines.

The vineyard has been restructured and the density is 5500 vines/hectare for the whites and 5000 vines/hectare for the reds. All the vines are single trellised and cane or spur pruned. The de-leafing process is partially or entirely mechanised, while selected plots are manually green harvested.

Since 2008, we have been carrying out “sélection massale” (propagating new vines from the best of our Sauvignon and Semillon vines).

Organic agriculture

Since 2005, the vineyard has been organically managed. This means that no chemical sprays, fertilisers, or weed-killers are used in the growing process.

This choice entails a number of significant challenges and great attention to detail. We have various tried-and-tested techniques that help us to combat some of the problems that wine growers encounter without the use of chemicals. These involve:

1. Adding stinging nettles into the compost to improve the vigour of the vines.

2. Silicon treatment of the vines to make them less susceptible to powdery mildew.

3. Using various resins to repel insects.

4. Adding clay to the soil to prevent root rot.

Our soil management is concerned foremost with de-compacting our soils naturally and stimulating the growth of natural micro flora, which break down the nitrogen in the soil, thus helping to aerate it.

In spare fields that are not being used for vines, we plant flowers to attract bees for pollination and sunflowers or maize to attract birds, which function as a natural control for the insect population.

We also take environmental concerns and sustainability very seriously. We manage our woods to preserve wildlife, collect and use rainwater where possible, recycle waste from the winery, and use bottles made from 85% recycled glass. Our cartons and bottle labels are also made from recycled paper.
